The flute part is generally low in the range and straight forward to play. It represents an interesting piece of the flute history in England and Birmingham. The composer performed it on his gold flute in December 1868, with the Birmingham Daily reporting that Mr. Mathews had performed it 'with immense effect'. It is dedicated to Mathew's friend, George Ingram, who was a pianist and organist in Birmingham.

James Mathews founded the Birmingham Flute Society in 1856 and was its vice-president for many years. An accomplished amateur flute player, he was very popular with audiences in the Midlands during the latter part of the c.19th century and enjoyed some degree of notoriety as the owner of a remarkable gold flute named 'Chrysoston' (greek:golden-mouthed) which he designed with an 18ct gold body and the extraordinary number of 28 silver keys.
