In response to a comment by Robert Schumann about 'female music', Johanna Kinkel wrote this rumbustious drinking song to prove that women could be as robust as men in their composing style. Scored for tenor solo and chorus, it was during a particularly happy part of Johanna's life, when she was living in Berlin and enjoying the company of other female composers such as Fanny (Mendelssohn) Hensel.
